The TEG Group Plc, the cutting edge green technology company, which converts organic wastes into natural organic fertiliser, has been awarded another local authority waste contract.

This latest win will see TEG take over the processing of household food waste on behalf of the partnership between Lancashire County Council  and Preston City Council.  The waste is now being sent to TEG's plant at Sherdley Farm, Preston.

The Food Waste Collection and Composting Trial is a partnership that involves meat-included waste being collected by Preston City Council on behalf of the trial.  This ground-breaking recycling initiative is funded through Lancashire Environment Fund and contributions from Defra.  The trial will be extended after securing additional funding from WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

Some 7,500 terraced households have been taking part in the trial, which has been running for almost two years.  Each house was issued with a seven litre kitchen caddy, two rolls of corn starch liner bags and a 25 litre outside container, together with instructions on what waste could be accepted.  The food waste is then collected by Preston City Council for processing into compost.

"This trial has been a tremendous success with local householders, who are envied by those outside the trial area," said David Stowe, Food Waste Recycling Project Officer for the City Council.  "Switching to TEG gives us the opportunity to look at expanding the service to other areas."

TEG Chief Executive Mick Fishwick said:  "We are delighted to have secured a further Local Authority contract and particularly one with our own County Council in Lancashire.  While it is initially a relatively small contract, the collection trial conducted by the Council is widely regarded as innovative and very successful. We hope that with our forthcoming expansion at Sherdley Farm, plus additional capacity provided at our Todmorden plant, we can offer the Council the capacity to expand the scope in the coming months and years.
