Lancashire companies team up in waste deal

23rd December 2005

Preston-based organic composting company TEG Environmental has secured a three-year contract to dispose of pizza waste from a Leyland production plant.

Schwan Consumer Brands UK, best known in this country for its Chicago Town pizzas, will send all pizza waste classified as Category III Animal By-Products to TEG Environmental?s Sherdley Farm site at Ratton Lane, Hutton, for composting. The contract is the first to be secured after TEG Environmental was granted approval to compost such food waste by the State Veterinary Service last month.

Commenting on the deal, Mick Fishwick, Chief Executive of TEG Environmental, said:  "As a local company producing food waste which requires responsible and environmentally compliant disposal, Schwan has supported TEG throughout its Animal By-Products accreditation process.  Concluding a long term agreement with a company of the size and quality of Schwan is an important step forward for TEG.  Not only is this a blue chip customer for our plant at Sherdley Farm but it opens up the door for further possible developments elsewhere with a global business. We look forward to developing our relationship with them over the coming years."

The contract with Schwan comes on the back of a further contract secured for the supply of green waste to the Sherdley Farm plant.  Green waste is an important material used to blend with food waste to ensure ideal composting conditions within the TEG Silo Cages.

The TEG Silo Cage system is applauded in the industry for its leading technology which is a natural process providing organic fertilisers that have a wide range of agricultural and horticultural uses.  TEG fertilisers are used by farmers to enhance their crops, and many recreational facilities, including parks and golf courses, achieve amazing results after using TEG products.

The vast majority of the waste processed at Sherdley Farm has been produced locally and includes catering and food wastes, as well as many tonnes of garden waste from local households, a vital ingredient in producing a high quality compost.  All activity takes place in an enclosed building to minimise the impact on the local environment.

The Company's expanding market is driven by increasingly stringent EU and UK legislation regulating the treatment and disposal of organic waste.
