Bradford University turns to composting in its drive for environmental best practice

The University of Bradford has introduced food waste composting as part of an ongoing drive towards best practice in sustainability.

The university, which accommodates 3,000 staff and 13,000 students, is one of the first organisations in Yorkshire to sign up to a new food waste collection service organised by composting specialists TEG Environmental.  All food waste from the university's main refectory is now saved in special containers which are then collected and taken directly to TEG's state of the art composting site at Todmorden.  There, the food waste is mixed with green waste before being fed into TEG's award-winning in-vessel silo composting cages. After two or three weeks the compost is offloaded and then marketed for agricultural, horticultural and domestic uses.

Bradford University decided to trial composting after discovering that the TEG ABP (Animal By-Product) approved Silo Cage system was capable of processing meat, poultry and fish waste as well as well as vegetable waste.  "As part of our drive to become an 'Ecoversity' we are committed to incorporating sustainability into our teaching and by setting an example in the way we handle wastes produced at the university," explained Estates Manager Simon Duarri.

"This policy has involved the abolition of traditional waste bins throughout the university in favour of segregated recycling bins for a wide variety of waste streams.  We have also introduced dedicated waste handling teams who operate during the day rather than after hours to clear waste and help to educate the university community on the benefits to sustainability of responsible waste disposal."

Simon Duarri is very pleased with the initial results of the TEG food waste collection scheme and feels that it is helping the university to achieve recognition as an 'Ecoversity'.  "Although it is still early days we feel this helps us to differentiate our approach to best practice in sustainability," he added.

Any company or organisation in Lancashire or Yorkshire that produces food waste is able to sign up for this specialist service.  For further information please call James Westcott at TEG Environmental on 01772 314100.
